United Church General Council Meets August 8 – 15
356 Commissioners Plus Over 200 Volunteers, Staff, and Guests
Gather in Corner Brook, Newfoundland
The second week of August will be quite intense for those attending the 42nd General Council of the United Church. The workbook containing the reports, proposals, and background information is over 1100 pages. It includes about 190 proposals, with almost half of those dealing with the Comprehensive Review Task Group’s report United in God’s Work.
The General Council is the national meeting of the United Church and is held every three years. The commissioners, who are elected from the thirteen conferences, receive reports of the work of the church, worship, approve policy, and elect the new moderator.
The United Church’s GC42 webpage is filled with information. Discover what policies and issues will be discussed, read about the twelve candidates for Moderator, follow the journey of the pilgrimage across Canada made by thirteen of the youth commissioners, and find the prayers for the 40-day prayer pilgrimage leading up to the General Council Meeting.
While General Council is meeting, social media allows people all across the country to experience the meeting and to be aware of what is taking place. There will be live streaming of much of General Council, including worship, plenary sessions, nominee speeches, and the vote for the next Moderator. As well, each day on the United Church’s You Tube Channel short clips will be posted that will provide highlights of the day. For other social media possibilities go to the GC42’s Social Connections page.
