CLWR provides a means to respond
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) joins with Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) in an emergency appeal to help with the climate and conflict crisis in East Africa. CLWR is partnering with other Canadian aid agencies in the Humanitarian Coalition to respond to this crisis. The Government of Canada has announced that, until June 30th, it will match all donations made to members of the Humanitarian Coalition up to five million dollars.
Conflict, climate change, and hunger are putting lives at risk in countries across East Africa. Severe drought continues to plague Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, where more than 23 million people are without reliable access to food and water.
The conflict in Sudan has forced more than 1.4 million people to flee their homes to escape the fighting. This exodus is putting an added strain on neighbouring countries, such as South Sudan, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic.
Millions of people are in urgent need of basic necessities to survive. Women, children, and the elderly face the greatest risks.
The ELCIC and CLWR is calling on their members to pray for those suffering and to give generously in support of the needs of all those affected. For the rest of this month, donations will be matched by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada. If you are able to contribute to this appeal, go to clwr.org/eastafrica.
