Red Dress Day – May 5th
Online Commemorative Service
May 5th at 4 pm PDT
~ from a post dated May 5th on The United Church of Canada’s Facebook page
On this day we commemorate and raise awareness for the loss of lives of Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People. We lament the loss of their lives, losses felt by families and communities, as they call for justice. The ongoing tragedy of violence, abuse, discrimination, targeting, trafficking, and othering of Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People is not an unsolvable issue, it is an issue of basic humanity: to treat people with respect, honour, and consideration in a society that has become more fractured, isolationist, and uncaring.
As people of faith we are called to stand up, intervene, educate, and advocate for the change we want to see in the world. This cannot be done without hard work; this cannot be done without personal risk of reputation, security, and privilege. If we are to live out the promises made to the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement and the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (especially Call to Action #41), we must work toward justice for the Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People in our midst and in our communities, to end the injustice that plagues our society and usher in new hope.
