Shrove Tuesday
A Day Celebrated with a Pancake Supper
Traditionally, the Church of St Paul has held a Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the beginning of Lent. In keeping with public health guidelines, this event will unfortunately not be happening this year.
However, that does not mean there is a need to give up the idea of a pancake dinner. For those that may decide to have pancakes for supper on Tuesday, March 1st, here is a prayer (adapted for the Church of St Paul) that has been shared by Moderator Richard Bott on his Facebook page.
A Prayer for Shrove Tuesday
One: God?
If we were to eat a cup full of flour,
All: (ick!)
One: or a spoonful of baking powder,
All: (bleh!)
One: or a spoonful of salt;
All: (yuck!)
One: or suck on a raw egg!
All: (ack!)
One: It really wouldn’t taste very good.
If we slurped back the oil or the butter
All: (nooo!)
One: or even tried to swallow all that sugar;
All: (too sweet!)
One: It just wouldn’t work!
All: But when we mix them together,
and we stir them up,
and we pour them on the griddle…
One: they’re amazing!
All: Just like your church!
bring us together,
bless all of our gifts –
our sweetness, our saltiness,
our rawness and all that makes us rise up!
One: Bless this pancake of
the Church of St Paul,
that, with your love,
we would feed the world!
All: (whispering) alleluia
(saying) Alleluia!
(shouting) ALLELUIA!
Amen!
