The WCRC Executive Committee met in Cuba this past week.  On May 13th, its final day of meetings, there was a focus on the host nation that included writing a Statement from Cuba that summarized what the Executive Committee had learned about the context of Cuban and Latin American churches.  As well, Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel spent time with them.

More about the Executive Committee’s meeting in Cuba and the statement it issued can be read on its website.  Regarding the award to Chris Ferguson, the following was posted on the WCRC’s facebook page.

We wish our general secretary, Chris Ferguson, many congratulations on being awarded the “Medalla de la Amistad” (Friendship Medal) from the Cuban government for his decades of humanitarian and advocacy work on behalf of the people of Cuba. Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel presented the medal to Chris at the end of our executive committee meeting.

In accepting the award Chris said, “You are honoring the church of Cuba, the love of their homeland and the importance of having solidarity with a church that has shown us how to survive. If I’m a friend of Cuba, it’s because the church in Cuba has called us to serve.”
